Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, are comprehensive alternatives to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans bundle hospital (Part A) and medical (Part B) coverage, often with added benefits like vision, dental, and prescription drug coverage. They operate within networks, providing varying levels of coverage, cost, and additional perks compared to Original Medicare.
Medicare Advantage (Part C) eligibility typically requires individuals to meet the following criteria:
- Enrollment in Medicare Parts A and B: To join a Medicare Advantage plan, you must have both Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance).
- Residence: You need to reside within the service area covered by the Medicare Advantage plan you wish to enroll in.
Exclusions: Some specific health conditions might affect eligibility or limit plan options, but in general, most individuals eligible for Original Medicare (Parts A and B) can enroll in Medicare Advantage plans.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): This is the first time you can enroll in Medicare, which includes the seven-month period surrounding your 65th birthday (three months before, the month of, and three months after your birthday month).
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): This occurs from October 15 to December 7 each year, allowing you to switch, drop, or enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan.
Open Enrollment Period (OEP): From January 1 to March 31, individuals enrolled in Medicare Advantage can switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare with the option to add a standalone prescription drug plan.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP): There are various SEPs triggered by certain life events, like moving, losing other coverage, or qualifying for Medicaid, allowing you to enroll in or change Medicare Advantage plans outside the typical enrollment periods.
